Ordered mesoporous carbons from lignin: a new class of biobased electrodes for supercapacitors

Herou, Servann; Ribadeneyra, Maria Crespo; Madhu, Rajesh; Araullo-Peters, Vicente; Jensen, Anders; Schlee, Philipp; Titirici, Magdalena

We report the synthesis of sustainable ordered mesoporous carbons (OMCs) produced from lignin, using the evaporation induced self-assembly (EISA) method. We demonstrated that it is possible to replace half of the phloroglucinol (a well-known carbon precursor currently not derived from bioprecursors) by hardwood organosolv lignin while obtaining a highly ordered…

Robust Oil-Fouling Resistance of Amorphous Cellulose Surface Underwater: A Wetting Study and Application

Zhou, Xin; Koh, J. Justin; He, Chaobin

The antioil-fouling characteristic of an amorphous cellulose (a-cellulose) surface was elucidated using the sessile droplet method (static) and a modified Wilhelmy plate technique (dynamic). As compared to other hydrophilic surfaces (cellulose acetate, poly(vinyl alcohol), and glass), the oil (poly(dimethylsiloxane)) contact angle on the a-cellulose surface underwater shows the largest value…

Gum Arabic in solution: Composition and multi-scale structures

Atgié, M.; Garrigues, J. C.; Chennevière, Alexis; Masbernat, O.; Roger, K.

Gum Arabic is a natural acacia tree exudate containing hyperbranched polysaccharides and proteins. Here, we perform a dual chromatographic separation together with small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering structural characterizations. We show that the different species present in Gum Arabic can not be easily classified in distinct families. They are rather…

In this study, effects of heat setting treatment (pre-set heat setting ratio λ and heat setting temperature Tsetting) on the crystalline structures, orientation status, microporous structures, gas permeability, and electrochemical performance of the separators were studied in detail by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), infrared dichroism, scanning electron microscope…

The effect of addition of low-layer graphene nanoparticles on structure and mechanical properties of polyurethane-based block copolymers

Gorbunova, Marina; Komratova, Viktoria; Grishchuk, Alexander; Badamshina, Elmira; Anokhin, Denis

The effect of low-layer graphene nanoparticles (LLGNP) at concentration from 0.002 to 0.1 wt.% on physical–mechanical and structural parameters of multi-block polyurethanes based on oligodiethyleneglycol adipinate, 2,4-toluylene diisocyanate and 1,6-hexamethylene diisocyanate mixture and bifunctional chain elongation agents, 2-aminoethanol and 1,4-butanediol has been studied. Three methods for…

In-flight modification of Ni nanoparticles by tubular magnetron sputtering

Kretkova, Tereza; Hanuš, Jan; Kylian, Ondrej; Solař, Pavel; Dopita, Milan; Cieslar, Miroslav; Choukourov, Andrei; Biederman, Hynek

Abstract Tubular magnetron was used for in-flight deposition of Cu over Ni nanoparticles (NPs) pre-synthesized in a planar magnetron-based gas aggregation cluster source. The amount of deposited copper was driven by magnetron current and magnetic field of the tubular magnetron. Structure of the resultant NPs was investigated by TEM, STEM,…

Enhanced Oxidation Stability of Transparent Copper Films Using a Hybrid Organic-Inorganic Nucleation Layer

Bellchambers, Phillip; Walker, M.; Huband, Steven; Dirvanauskas, A.; Hatton, Ross Andrew

We report a novel seed layer for the formation of slab-like transparent copper films on glass and plastic substrates, based on a mixed molecular monolayer and an ultra-thin (0.8 nm) aluminium layer both deposited from the vapour phase, which substantially outperforms the best nucleation layer for optically thin copper films…

Poly(oxymethylene)/poly(butylene succinate) blends: Miscibility, crystallization behaviors and mechanical properties

Jiao, Qi; Shen, Jieqing; Ye, Lijun; Li, Yongjin; Chen, Hualin

In this work, we investigated the miscibility, crystallization behaviors and mechanical properties of the crystalline/crystalline poly(oxymethylene)/poly(butylene succinate) (POM/PBSU) blends. It was found that POM and PBSU are miscible in the melt state. The POM with a higher melting temperature (Tm) crystallizes first into banded spherulites and the crystals fill the…
